The 5501-471 is a Woodward NetCon SIO module, a core component of the system's hardware communication interface.
The module's core serial input/output capability utilizes a "serial communication" mode, where data is transmitted bit-by-bit over a single communication channel. Compared to parallel communication, this is more suitable for long-distance, interference-resistant transmission in industrial settings, effectively reducing cabling costs and signal attenuation.
The 5501-471 module does not operate independently. It converts raw serial sensor data into a standard data format that can be recognized and processed by the turbine's main control system. It also converts control commands issued by the main control system into serial signals that can be interpreted by the actuators. Furthermore, it collaborates with the main control system to provide closed-loop control of the turbine's core parameters.
It supports a variety of commonly used industrial serial interfaces, including RS-232, RS-485, and Modbus. Some models are also compatible with UART interfaces.
